Gerald Marks (1921-2018) was a well-known painter in oils and acrylics and an art teacher. He was born in London and studied at the Central School of Arts and Crafts both before and after the Second World War. He exhibited with the London Group, Artists International Association, and in group shows at the Redfern Gallery and the Leicester Galleries. During the 1950s he taught in London and during this period he painted a good number of portraits and still life subjects, usually with strong colour. By about 1960 he turned to abstract expressionism. After he retired from teaching in 1986 he spent several months each year painting in the south of France. His work is represented in several public collections, including the Ben Uri, The London Jewish Museum of Art, and the Arts Council. A Memorial Exhibition was held at Heatherley’s School of Fine Art in Lots Road, Chelsea, which opened in November 2018.
